Reading Tesla quarterly deliveries like an investor

Tesla reports deliveries before it reports earnings. That gap is the single most useful window a shareholder gets. Production and delivery numbers land within days of quarter close, while the income statement waits three weeks. Analysts model from the first number, so the market reprices before the official results arrive.

Watch the mix, not just the total. Model Y volume carries gross margin; Model S and X carry pricing power. When the mix shifts toward the higher-priced trims, revenue per unit rises even if unit count is flat. That is usually the difference between a soft quarter that beats and a strong quarter that misses.

Inventory days matter as much as units shipped. Rising days on hand forces discounting, and discounting shows up in automotive gross margin one quarter later. A holder who tracks both numbers understands the margin story before the earnings call explains it.
